Free safety and risk assessment workshops

Seafood Cornwall Training carried out a survey in 2021 which found that 70% of respondents had not called the coastguard after an incident at sea. Skippers and vessel owners were concerned of the risk their vessel may be prevented from going out to sea after an inspection from the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA), following an accident report.

To help vessel owners address concerns of restrictions after an MCA inspection, Seafood Cornwall Training offer free safety and risk assessment workshops. Ex-fisher, Clive Palfrey, goes from vessel to vessel offering one-on-one advice to make vessels safe and ready for an MCA inspection

• Clive previously worked as a fishermen and a coxswain in the RNLI.
• He knows the value of online and social media information but understands that the best way to reach fishermen is a more hands on approach and going to their vessels to speak.
• Clive shares information, breaks down key points from the MCA or other marine guidance notices and provides free advice
• Clive will assess and write risk assessments. He outlines the relevant safe working practices and best practice from other fishermen. For example, what is the safest way to haul your crab pots aboard
• If someone is in crisis, with health or addiction, they can be pointed towards Seafit for support
• If someone needs financial support, they can be pointed towards the Fishermen’s Mission or SAIL
