Managing Our Waters

After BREXIT, the United Kingdom left the EU and Common fisheries policy. We became an independent coastal state, in charge of managing the resources within our own exclusive economic zone

The UK Fisheries Act was passes in 2020 and by the end of 2022, the UK Fisheries Administrations will issue a Joint Fisheries Statement (JFS) – this will set out the objectives to be met with the Fisheries Management plans

WE HAD A CHAT WITH Jerry Percy (NUTFA), Barrie Deas (NFFO) & Mike Park (SWFPA)

to talk about what the Joint Fisheries Statement means for the fishing industry, how to engage, and some key thoughts on responding to the consultation. Find out more about the JFS

Territorial waters

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS, 1982) recognises 12 mile territorial limits, within which the seas are sovereign territory. Managed by the devolved administrations inshore fishery groups

Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)

Is the area between coast and the 200-mile limits between jurisdictions where states have rights to exploit marine resources, including fish and shellfish stocks. Previously the EEZ of every EU member state was merged into a large zone which could be accessed by all European fishermen.

High Seas

Is the name given for international waters which are outside of each countries EEZ. It is managed by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) under the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement (UNFSA,1995), signed by 80 parties. Coastal states have a responsibility to seek agreement with other states to protect straddling or highly migratory stocks

This map shows the extent of the UKs exclusive economic zone (dailymail.co.uk)

71% of the earth is covered by ocean and 64% of the ocean is considered high seas – an area which belongs to no country. Learn more about Ocean Governance (insert link)
